Air conditioning units are used to regulate the air in your house by removing heat from the air and taking it outside through the vents.  Air Conditioning units do not produce cold air as most people think. Instead, it removes heat from a house and then circulates the cool air that is left.

AC units are important to have in a home, especially in the hot Canadian summer months. Having one assures you of cool comfort in the sweltering heat.

Is your AC unit giving you trouble? Is it not starting at all? The fans aren’t blowing? Is the unit fully quiet and not coming on? When our customers are dealing with the above issues, they normally start searching for Air Conditioner Repair Contractors in Milton Ontario. These are some of the questions our TopCare HVAC of Milton Ontario will ask to see what could be the problem and what would be the best solutions to get the AC unit working as soon as possible. Our team has done many AC Repair service calls near, Woodward Ave, Laurier Ave, Yates Dr, and Clark Blvd in Milton Ontario

There are several reasons as to why your AC unit is not turning on and these issues can be fixed quickly. These issues include:

  • A blocked drain line
  • A mucky filter
  • A hitch with your thermostat

Below are some of the reasons your air conditioner won’t start up, as well as how to fix it. If doing these things doesn’t fix your AC, the next step of action is to contact our HVAC Contractors in Milton to sort out the issues. Contacting an expert is a safe way to fix the issue and get back to enjoying your cool home.

Replacing the AC Filter

Dirty filters are one of the most common problems that make AC units refuse to turn off. Over time, filters trap pet fur, dust, dirt and other micro particles in the air of a room. When this dirt in the filter gets to a certain threshold, the AC cannot function and shuts off.

Take a look at the filter in the unit and inspect it closely. If it is indeed clogged, then it is time to replace it with a new air filter.

When you replace the filter, the AC unit won’t turn on as usual. Because of this procedure, you will need to reset or reboot the air conditioner. Many units have a reboot button, but models do differ so it’s best to check out the User Manual for specifications.

  1. Turn off the power of the AC unit. Many times it is found in a panel that’s adjacent to the AC unit.
  2. Turn the breaker of your air conditioner in your home’s fuse box.
  3. Wait for several minutes. Afterwards, connect the power again.
  4. Look at the thermostat and set it to cool and select the temperature value of your choice.

After this, your air conditioner will come alive again.

Clogged Drain Lines

This could be a reason that your AC unit is not coming on.

Due to the heat exchange and activity in your AC unit, moisture is produced. This moisture is natural and there is a line that drains it out. In time, dirt blocks off the line and when this happens, your AC shuts off. The result of this can be some messy leakages that cause home damage over time.

Before performing any maintenance, turn off the power source to your air conditioning unit. This is for safety purposes.

Below are some easy ways to clean the AC drain:

  1. The AC unit drain line is a small pipe made of plastic and it is very easy to locate. It is found close to your condenser unit.
  2. Get a Shop-Vac or another vacuum that is approved for wet use. Attach it to the pipe and if needed, use a rag to act as a seal at the mouth of the drainpipe.
  3. Put on the vacuum and run it for a couple of minutes. This should clear the pipe of all debris.
  4. Reconnect your Air Conditioner to the power. It will start up as usual.

Using a vacuum may not be a long-term solution. In case the blockage is bigger the next time and keeps recurring, call in a certified HVAC technician to deal with the situation at hand.

The problem may be more than the blocked line.

Filthy Condenser Coils

Owning a split AC unit increases the possibility of dust particles, dirt and debris lodging in the condenser coils. Split ACs have two parts, one inside the home and one that sits outside the house.

The coils function to release heat into the air outdoors.

The dirt prevents the coils from functioning efficiently, leading to the subsequent turning off of your air conditioner. To deal with this, do the following:

  1. For safety reasons, turn off the AC unit’s power on the main electricity switch.
  2. Take off the cover of the outdoor AC unit and gently spray it down with a hosepipe. Use low-pressure water because using a strong jet of water may bend and break your coils, causing extensive damage that you may need to pay for.
  3. Let it dry, put the cover back on and reboot your air conditioner.

If this is not your cup of tea or you don’t trust yourself to clean the condenser coil, our Milton AC Repair Technicians to avoid damaging your unit unknowingly.

Issues With the Thermostat

If your air conditioning unit isn’t coming on, there may be a glitch with the thermostat. Take a quick look at it. Check and make sure it is set to cool and at the right Celsius or Fahrenheit. If it’s not, do that. After that, change the temperature to an average of six degrees below the climate of the room at that time.

Programing the temperature on the thermostat is a must because turning the thermostat to cool mode is not enough to turn the AC unit on.

Issues-with-the-Thermostat

The next step of action is to check to see if the thermostat has been connected well. Most AC unit models have a faceplate containing both controls as well as a display. The baseplate is fixed onto the wall. Wires from the base plate run to the furnace and AC unit.

The two should be linked by electrical prongs. The AC unit won’t turn on if the thermostat gets disconnected from the wall.

If the thermostat is powered by batteries, try and change them. Usually, by looking at the display on the faceplate, you can tell if the batteries are out.

If the thermostat is powered, check that all wires flowing towards and into the plate at the base are connected well. When all this is done, the air conditioner should start with no issue.
